ATTENDANCE:

Gordon Jackson
Gwen Deurell Canterbury Police Chief
Mike Capone Selectman Representative
Meeting began with Chief Gwen Deurell at 7 PM.
Chief provided written summary
notes of her needs as requested.
The chief gathered information from other departments in neighboring
communities. Considering a 4-5 year time frame for growth and
needs.
Bob Fisk of Loudon Police Department was able to give insight
into the needs of a similarly sized department. Chief Fisk (Loudon)
suggested that you really need two garage bays, especially when
impounding vehicles.
Loudon is an example of a combined police and Fire Department.
Chief Deurell suggest that there might be significant benefits
to the community by doubling up on common meeting and other spaces
that the PD and FD have in common.
Officers in Canterbury (at full recruitment):
One full time chief
One full time officer
3-4 part time officers
16 hours a day/ 7 days a week coverage
administrative help (part time)
Major immediate concern is secure holding space, to detain individuals
in the event they become violent.
Chief Deurell feels that the current facilities are adequate for
now
she can "make it work". But she would like
a little more time to consider further what "interim"
needs may arise once she has filled her personnel roster.
Kathleen (administrative assistant) has requested a half-door
to prevent people from just walking in to the station
for
safety reasons.
Jeremy suggested, and Chief Deurell agreed that a brief follow
up meeting might be useful in 3-4 weeks once she has completed
hiring personnel and has had more time to consider the facility
she is working in and things that may be lacking
NEXT MEETING:
The next meeting will be in two weeks, on 6/20/01 at 7 PM at Canterbury
Town Hall as a community meeting, to invite input from community
members.
